Re: Gartner report

supermon,

You hit the nail on the head; WPM was purpose-built to monitor websites and web apps through synthetic transactions.  It is admittedly not a full blown APM solution; however, using WPM with Server and Application Monitor, Virtualization Manager, and Storage Manager can give you visibility across the majority of the application stack on which your application is running.

One point of clarification, WPM does not leverage scripts.  The recorder was built to be WYSIWYG so you don't have to learn a scripting language to create recordings and transactions.

Can you elaborate on what you're trying to do that requires you to duplicate recordings?  Are you trying to run the same series of steps on different pages?

How can I open a downloaded file with WPM?

Hi,

I recorded a transaction with WPM and I need to check if a string exists inside a pdf file that is downloaded from a web page, but I can't open the downloaded file through the recorder. Does anybody know if it is possible?

Thank you.

Hello,

WPM allows you to check for string only in web page, it does not support searching in downloaded files. Moreover PDF is not simple text file so searching in PDF is something that usually only PDF reader application can do.

Yes, that is a simple example. If I have 5 servers and I want the script to hit the same url on all 5 servers I should be able to duplicate the steps and change one character of the url.

Yes, I realized this... Well, I had to skip this string check step.

Thank you, anyway!

Re: WPM creating 'excessive' amount of TEMP folders? Why ..?

Ok, so.. no domain accounts on this particular player location (my mistake).

The reason (I think) that these additional folders etc are being created is down to some attempted remedial work done on this box prior (due to space issues occurring previously as well).

These took the shape of amending IE settings for retention from 20 days to 2 days & also amending a config file - SolarWinds.SEUM.Agent.Service.exe.config - to use only 3 SEUM users, then restarting the service. I think somewhere along the way, permissions have been screwed (it's a technical term) hence the profile errors & Windows is creating the additional folders as a symptom of this.

Think I may just perform a reinstall of the WPM Player / Recorder unless someone knows a quicker fix??

Head scratching continues, posting here so that it might be useful for anyone else who encounters this behaviour...

Presently, I'm getting no closer to remedying this (can feel a support ticket coming on) .

It seems that for one reason or another, the WPM player is creating a TEMP profile each time a transaction runs as it is lacking the permission to re-use (or otherwise update/amend/delete) the previously created profile. Why this is the case, I don't know as reviewing how it's all set up it all appears as it does in the other locations I have this in place (am sure I've either overlooked something or not looked in the area I need to) but it's certainly a permissions issue (I think) somewhere.

We used to use APM to monitor our websites.  Recently we purchased WPM.  We used a resource that appeared on the APM Component Detail Page quite alot.  It seems this resource is not available in WPM.  Am i missing it or will this have to become an enhancement request?  See attached screen shot of resurce from APM Component detail page

Would love to have a resource that is a mix between the out of the box WPM Availability reports and the above resource something that showed all the above time frames and included the Availability and the Min/Max/Avg duration

This resource is not available in WPM today but is something we're tracking internally under FB159731.

Hi Daniel,

can you try to switch WPM to use local accounts instead of domain ones to check if the issue is still there? Otherwise I suggest opening a support case so that we cam look at log files.

Morning... I opened case 677000 yesterday evening & support have already come back with some thoughts/ideas on this.. (have to say, my experiences with Solarwinds support have always been really great!! Thanks)

Condensed feedback below for reference:

I don't believe these are related to WPM, there's no mechanism I'm aware of that would have it create temp accounts/folders in that fashion, and labelled as such. I'm more inclined to think they might be related to Storage Manager instead, based on the names (STMAN). I'm inquiring with my STM colleagues to see if that might be the case.

I'd be keen to hear the STM teams' feedback on this aspect, although checking the folders being created, they look to be being created by one of the SEUM accounts...

Additionally, there was indeed an issue with WPM and webcache files filling up hard drive space in version 2.0.1, this is resolved in version 2.1. However, under no case I've ever seen would it create these temp user account folders.

Can you tell me what the contents of these folders are? Do they look like normal user accounts? Does the name of the folders hold any significance?

They do look like normal user accounts with all the 'standard' Windows sub-folders

Looking over the thread more, I see that you are configured to use domain accounts. What are the account names being used? Do those accounts have profiles that have been created? Can you log into the player location as those users?

Need to check/confirm around this.

Okay reading further, you mentioned you're -not- using domain accounts for playback. Okay fair enough. Let's try something, stop all the WPM services, -delete- all the TEMP folders as well as the SEUM-User-Folders, go into Control Panel/Manage Users (however you want to get there), and delete all the SEUM-User accounts. Restart the services, and those SEUM-User accounts should 'come back'. See if it's still creating temp folders.

This step has just been attempted.. will report on outcome shortly..

Ok, after a (brief) period of monitoring this, I'm pleased to report that the steps suggested:

1. Stop the WPM service

2. Delete all associated Temp folders

3. Remove the SEUM-User accounts

4. Restart the WPM service

Appear to have had a positive effect on the situation..

I'm wonder if we should have 'bolted on' these actions when amending the other fixes as per this thread - SEUM-User-# using up disk space ??

Either way, it looks to be in a good place now so thanks to Mike in support & jiri.tomek

Thanks for details supermon, quick solution would be to export the recording, change what you need in XML file, import back and save as new recording. However I recorded this as a new feature request under # 242452 for simple editing of URL. Ability to change URL can also lead to hidden issues as if you change the URL without knowing what you do (and sometimes recordings are created by non technicians, e.g. UX or other functions), you can get completely unpredictable behavior if it's malformed URL.

WPM TCP Waterfall Legacy Statistics

One of our developers asked a good question. Within the TCP Waterfall chart they would like to be able to see legacy statistics and not just the results of the most recent transaction. I couldn't find anything that would work for them. Is something like this possible?

Hello,

WPM currently does not keep history of TCP waterfall data, only the last snapshot. We have internal feature request tracked as FB114385 for this.

One way to get around this is to set up the alert that exports whole TCP Waterfall resource to PDF and mails it to you. If you need the data only when transaction is performing bad this may be a solution for now.

I think we can wait. it was a valid question from the team so i will get back to them to let them know.

Thanks!

Did you figure out the issue?  We are having the same issue here and I believe our workstation running the recorder and player have been upgraded to IE9.  I get the same exception, only in recorder/player.  If I run it manually using IE directly, it works, although compatibility mode is needed.

I was under the impression that WPM couldn't search through XML at all?   We have several tests like this and I ended up having to make a cgi script that is passed the XML url and then the cgi script itself searches the results and returns a success or failure message for WPM.
